SITE SPECIFIC INSTALLATION

“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

I decided to combine two philosophies that contradict each other. One is the destruction of nature due to urban development. The other one is the destruction of urban development by the forces of nature.

For their representation I chose to depict nature as a red large spiral wire covered in red material and stitched in black and for urban development I chose the opposite a black large spiral wire stitched in red. I placed both of them in a location that combines modern urban buildings and trees that were planted artificially at the Rockville Town Square.

In there a plaza is centered between restaurants, library and art gallery. I displayed both of my pieces and interconnected them. The purpose is to challenge the viewer to distinguish the importance and consequences of urban development in relation to nature. Also create a visual representation that can be tied to my idea.

After that process I decided to take the installation to a natural space and also photograph it, to create contrast in the two opposite environments.
